Safaa Elagib Adam

Secretary General and Gender Advisor of the Community Development Association - standing up for human rights

Ms. Safaa Elagib Adam is one of the founding members for the Community Development Association (CDA), a Sudanese non-governmental organization working on sustainable development and peace, with a special focus on Darfur and the other western states of Sudan. She is also an executive member of the Sudanese Women's Empowerment for Peace and Development Network; a founding member of Khartoum's Community Development Association; and a member of the Sudanese Women's Solidarity Group, the Civil Society Initiative for Peace Forum, and the Women in Law and Development Network.

Ms. Adam advised the group of women civil society leaders that participated in the seventh round of the Darfur Peace Negotiation in Abuja, Nigeria. She is also a board member for the Darfur Relief and Documentation Centre, based in Geneva. Ms. Adam was among the group of 1000 women peace builders nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005.

Standing up for the principles of the Universal Declaration
Article 2 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights affirms the right not to be discriminated against based on one's sex. These important tenets against gender-based discrimination were strengthened in 1979 through the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).
