GCAP 50 Days of Action Update
Civil Society Forum on Aid Effectiveness
1 September 2008 | Accra
Our friends at GCAP are leading on the Every Human Has Rights theme 'Freedom from Want' with their work mobilizing millions of people to help change the conditions still trapping over 1 billion women and men in poverty today. They launched their '50 Days of Action Against Poverty' initiative from Accra on September 1st, while participants gathered from around the world for high-level forum on aid effectiveness. The following is excerpt from Whiteband.org:
Last week ministers and senior officials from over 150 countries including heads of multilateral institutions and civil society organisations concluded their High-Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness in Accra, Ghana. At the forum they discussed a limited number of key issues around the subject of Aid Effectiveness. The result was the negotiation and endorsement of the Accra Action Agenda (AAA), or as we wanted to call it... the Accra IN-Action Agenda.
GCAP representatives including Adelaide Sosseh (GCAP co-chair, The Gambia), Christophe Zoungrana (GCAP Africa Secretariat, Senegal) and Seth Abloso (GCAP Global Council, Ghana) were present at the forum and worked with the Better Aid coalition, CIVICUS and others to present a powerful civil society case for increased Aid Effectiveness. The GCAP delegation engaged in a significant amount of media work, and Kumi Naidoo (co-chair, South Africa) took part in the High-Level Forum itself. Read more

In the lead up to the High-Level Event on the Millenium Development Goals in New York next week, GCAP has coordinated a series of symbolic poverty hearing around the world. Hearings have taken place in South Africa and Bangladesh in August and will continue throughout September in Nigeria, Nepal, India, Philippines, Liberia, the Gambia, Cameroon and elsewhere.
Just days before the UN High-Level Event on MDGs in New York City, GCAP will hold an International Poverty Hearing in the city on September 23. Informed by outcomes of national hearings, witnesses, and expert witnesses on key themes, the outcomes and recommendations will be sent directly to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon to influence the outcomes of the High-Level MDG Event.
