16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence

Human rights cannot be universal without human rights for women. Today marks the first of 16 day of activism around the world - standing up for women's rights and against gender violence.

Every Human Has Rights partner, the Center for Global Women's Leadership (CWGL) led on the 'Women's Rights as Human Rights' theme during this campaign - and they've dedicated this year's 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence to celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration and to making demands to advance women’s human rights.

16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence is an international campaign that was started by the Center for Women's Global Leadership in 1991. According to the Center's website:

"Participants chose the dates, November 25, International Day Against Violence Against Women and December 10, International Human Rights Day, in order to symbolically link violence against women and human rights and to emphasize that such violence is a violation of human rights. This 16-day period also highlights other significant dates including November 29, International Women Human Rights Defenders Day, December 1, World AIDS Day, and December 6, which marks the Anniversary of the Montreal Massacre."

Paying tribute to the courage of all women human rights defenders who risk their lives in defense of their rights, and the rights of others - CWGL is honoring 16 women human rights defenders that have have endured risks and danger to pursue their activism.

UNICEF supports the EHHR campaign with a PSA

UNICEF: 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights PSA

UNICEF teamed up with The Elders' Archbishop Desmond Tutu, creating this new campaign public service announcement for the Every Human Has Rights campaign. UNICEF is working to encourage young people to realize their rights.

Hope for Human Rights in an Era of New Leadership

For those of you living in the New York region of the United States, our partners at Realizing Rights invite you to join them for evening of conversation on 'Hope for Human Rights in an Era of New Leadership' at the New York Society for Ethical Culture, November 24th, 2008.

Mary Robinson will join Larry Cox, Executive Director of Amnesty International USA; Samuel Kofi Woods, Labor Minister of Liberia, Dr. Blanche Wiesen Cook, Acclaimed Author and Eleanor Roosevelt Scholar, and distinguished members of the international human rights, media and entertainment community.

The event marks the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and includes the New York Premiere of Amnesty’s global music video The Price of Silence, produced by Link TV, followed by a special musical performance.

The Public vote for most eye opening human rights report is open and we need your help

After the field of 482 applicants was narrowed through national and regional selections, and an international professional jury made up of experienced journalists and human rights experts selected 30 EHHR Media Award winners - we need your help.

Between now and midnight on November 30th, you can help choose the most eye opening report on human rights amongst the 30 winners. By visiting the EHHR Media Awards website, you can watch, listen to, and read all 30 Media Award winning submissions. Each piece will show you different faces of the struggle to make human rights a reality in every corner of the planet.

EHHR Media Award winners announced

Just months ago, EHHR campaign partner Internews called on journalists and citizen journalists all around the world to submit their best work to the Every Human Has Rights Media Awards. They received 482 applications, with stories from 108 countries and on November 1st, Internews announced the 30 winners:

The 30 winners are awarded an all expenses paid trip to Paris from December 5th to December 11th, 2008. On Saturday December 6th, they will attend the Every Human Has Rights campaign celebration including the Awards Ceremony.
