Teaching Peace Through Children's Theater - standing up for human rights

Once a victim of the daily brutality that characterizes life in Palestinian refugee camps, Abdelfattah Abusrour now teaches children in the camps non-violent self-expression using sports, arts and theater. His program leverages these activities to impart a sense of tolerance and empathy, and helps children develop non-violent communication patterns.

He complements these programs by training parents and community members in non-violent resistance. By touring internationally with his children's theater group, the program has gained worldwide support and recognition. "The children themselves, in time, become promoters of peace," he says.

Standing up for the principles of the Universal Declaration
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights emphasizes the fundamental importance of personal liberty and security. Article 4 bans slavery in all forms. Article 5 bans torture, without exception, by affirming, "No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment." Articles 6-11 of the Declaration affirm the rights to privacy, to equal protection under the law, to the legal presumption of innocence, and to fair trials.
